Dear Fellow Long Islander,

Since the events of September 11th, the Long Island Studies
Institute at Hofstra University has been collecting and cataloging
materials that depict Long Islanders' response to that tragic day. Our
efforts have ensured that important documents and artifacts regarding
this historically significant event will be preserved for scholars,
teachers, students and the general public.

With the fifth anniversary of September 11th approaching, we are
now focusing on the responses of Long Island's artistic community. If
you have created a work inspired by the events of September 11th, we
would be interested in learning about it. We welcome photographs,
flyers, renderings, programs or any materials pertaining to your work to
include in our catalogue of community responses at the Long Island
Studies Institute. Our goal is to identify and preserve these important
items for posterity
. If you are interested in participating in our
September 11th Project, please contact us at the mailing address,
phone/fax number or email address listed below. If you have a picture of
your work, we encourage you to submit it as well.

If you know of another artist or group who is responsible for a
memorial or artwork commemorating September 11th, we would be happy to
include them as well. Please feel free to send us (via email, letter or
fax) their contact information.

Margarita Friedman

"I am a figurative painter, trained in classical techniques. Here are some hints.
For example, on the first day you only concentrate on the composition and ?blocking? the figure, that means separating lights and shadows in a very broad way.

On the second session you concentrate on the background and begin with the
figure dark/shadow areas. On the following 2 sessions you start working on
the lights and likeness. On the last session you concentrate on details and
edges. This approach takes away a lot of anguish since you know exactly
what to do. You are not all over the canvass making changes all the time.

If you prefer to draw, the approach is similar. On the first session you
only block the figure. On the next sessions is shading, volume building and
on the last one, the details, final corrections and edges.

Since it does take a lot of time to pin the figure, get the right values and
forms, a long pose is necessary. If you are interested in a more realistic
way of painting or drawing, this is your opportunity. It is a great way to
develop your observation skills with the figure and to work at a steady
pace, no need to shmeer because of the lack of time!

If there are not enough people we cannot run the studio, so please call as soon
as possible. Need 10 people to cover the expenses.
